What is Gin?

gin knowledge

What is gin?

Gin is a generally dry and tasty spirit with a clear character of juniper, coriander and citrus. Modern gins have other spices, but juniper must dominate the flavor for the drink to be called gin. The alcohol content must be at least 37.5% by volume.

Gin is a versatile alcohol and is often used as a base in cocktails, such as the classic Gin & Tonic or Martinin. Its characteristic taste makes it a popular choice for various drinks.

So, in short, gin is a spirit made by distilling neutral spirit with juniper berries and other botanical ingredients to create an aromatic and characteristic flavor profile

The most common and cheapest way to produce gin is to pour essences into neutral spirit. The result is then simply called gin.

Gin Contains

What does gin contain?

Juniper: It is the primary flavor component that gives gin its characteristic taste.

Botanical ingredients: In addition to juniper, gin may contain other botanicals such as coriander seeds, angelica root, citrus peel, cinnamon, licorice root and other herbs and spices.

Neutral spirits: Gin is made by distilling neutral spirits, usually from grain or potatoes. The alcohol and botanicals are often distilled in copper stills to extract flavors and create a pure gin.

The gin’s flavor profile varies depending on which and how many botanical ingredients are used during the distillation process. It is the combination of juniper berries and other botanical elements that gives gin its complex and aromatic character. In general, aging gin is not as common as, for example, whiskey. Gin is usually a distilled spirit that has already acquired its flavors and character during distillation.

Different types of gin

There are lots of different types of gin, especially since different countries have different methods and spices in their production. But there are some varieties that are more prominent and well-known than others. You can read about these below.

Distilled gin

This is the most common type of modern gin today, and many other gins are made with this type as a base. Distilled gin is made by redistilling pure alcohol of 96% together with juniper berries and possibly also other spice mixture. It can be further flavored after distillation, but the dominant flavor must come from juniper berries for it to be classified as gin. This type of gin has become increasingly common and popular on the market.

Old Tom

Old Tom Gin is the general name for the original variety of gin, which became popular in the 18th century. This type of gin is mainly used in the drink Tom Collins. In the beginning, gin was mainly flavored with juniper berries, but when the drink was sweetened, Old Tom Gin arose - a sweet but juniper-tasting type of gin, which sometimes also includes other flavoring substances in the flavoring. It is still produced by various distilleries and is more well-seasoned than London Dry.

London Dry Gin

This type of gin is produced in the same way as ordinary distilled gin. The only difference is that you are not allowed to flavor or sweeten the drink after the second distillation. This type of gin is not protected by origin, and is therefore allowed to be produced all over the world.

Plymouth gin

In addition to juniper, the drink is flavored with dried orange peel to get a fresher taste. Plymouth gin is protected of origin and may only be produced by a distillery located in Plymouth, England. The product is classified as a distilled gin.
